We are spoilt for choice for great café’s and tearooms around us at Destination Balcary and Ross Bay Retreat.
Whether you want to head out for snack, lunch with friends or family, read a good book or the papers or sit and relax there is something for everyone. Here are a selection of our personal recommendations and also our guest’s favourites that they have found on their travels when out and about.
The wide choice includes café’s and tearooms that are all ideally located to visit after browsing the shops or been out exploring the countryside. There is nothing better than sitting down with a pot of tea and a fresh baked cake after a good walk and feeling tempted by more on display!

Kirkcudbright Café’s and Tearooms
Many of the following can be visited after touring the town’s art galleries, mooching the shops or after strolling around the harbour.
- Mullberries Coffee Shop, Kirkcudbright – Lovely coffee shop serving freshly cooked meals and excellent home baked cakes and very popular variety scones. From breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon teas to high teas available there is something for everyone. The delicious breakfast of avocado, poached egg and bacon on cornbread gets a few mentions!

- The Galleries Cafe, Kirkcudbright – Visit the wonderful art galleries, exhibitions and maybe take a tour then enjoy tea and cake, sandwich or just a coffee at the café. Breakfast menu also available until 11.30am.
- Solway Tide, Kirkcudbright -Lovely friendly café with great coffee and freshly made cakes that can be enjoyed inside or amongst a forest of pot plants and shrubs in a beautiful garden style setting.
- Feast Café, Kirkcudbright – Mediterranean inspired home cooking, made from local produce, found in seaside town Kirkcudbright. Feast is a family project, where you eat good food, have good chats and share good times. Try the ‘Shakshuka’ – Eggs, north African style on focaccia or give Grandma’s famous Carrot Cake a go!
- Clann, Kirkcudbright – Clann is a cafe serving breakfast, light lunches, tea, coffee & cake! From treacle scones, excellent Biscoff cake to fantastic deluxe milkshakes. Tasty savoury options available too with a wild selection of homemade soups, quiche and more.

Cafe’s Near Castle Douglas & Auchencairn
- Auchencairn Community Cafe & Store – Today’s menu is Tunnocks teacake tiffin! (love the alliteration), coconut and raspberry crumble bars & coffee and walnut cheesecake! Tomorrow will be something equally random but appetising. Savoury options include stone-baked sourdough pizzas to ‘Chorizo & Chilli Jam Turnovers’ and scrummy pork & apple sausage rolls. The store is well stocked with fresh local and homemade produce too.
- Designs Cafe, Castle Douglas – At Designs Gallery & Café visitors can mooch about the bookstore, contemporary art, design, craft and handmade jewellery. The café spoils everyone for choice. From Eggs Galloway, Bacon Gruyere Bruschetta to superb homemade scones and cakes as well an array of hot & cold drinks.

- The Old School House Tearoom at Ringford, North of Kirkcudbright – This former school has been transformed into an all day eatery. They prepare and cook almost everything themselves. From tasty soups, inventive fresh salads, hearty baguettes, toasted pannini’s, tummy warming chilli to vegetarian specials. Relax with Brodie’s tea and coffee or perhaps a Cream of Galloway ice cream?
The Old Schoolhouse – Ringford
- Galloway Lodge, Gatehouse of Fleet – The Galloway Lodge serves a selection of hot drinks and barista made coffee using Matthew Algie triple certified organic Tiki coffee. The full menu features soups, sandwiches, melts, burgers, a selection of daily specials and superb home baking. The fully stocked gift shop is stocked with a selection of Scottish food and gifts. - Sweetheart Abbey Cottage Tearoom & Gardens, New Abbey, nr. Dumfries – A busy kitchen early every morning producing superb home-cooked food. From wonderful fresh scones to fresh homemade soups in a spectacular setting. You’ll find many of the region’s finest local producers and seasonal ingredients on the menu, as well as fruit and salad from the gardens.
