The Farm

Airds of Balcary Working Farm

As Airds of Balcary Farm is a working farm there may be sheep and lambs in the fields, cows and calves roaming the hills, the chickens, bantams and guinea fowl scratching around the yard and fields, with our pigeons enjoying a birds eye view whilst swooping around the steading and maybe a little farther afield.

We have  farm cats on patrolling to keep the vermin at bay the natural way!

There may be some farm activities going on during your visit to Balcary, depending on the time of year and the weather of course!  We may be cutting grass for silage and hay for winter feed for the animals and baling it into round bales for storage.  We use colourless wrap which is the most environmentally friendly and great for recycling too…….

In Springtime the sheep have their lambs, and our cows have their calves.  The hens start laying so we sometimes see an unexpected clutch of chicks which just appear in the steading when they have hatched!

In summertime the sheep have all their wool shawn to keep them cool and provide us with wool which we sell to the wool board for making woollen products like nice warm jumpers and scarves.

When autumn and winter arrive the cattle will all be housed indoors and the sheep will have grown back their wool to keep them warm on the cold windy winter days.

There are lots of agricultural shows locally in Dumfries and Galloway which are a great day out for the family, with animals, games, fun activities, showing, local arts, crafts and produce –  look at our blog for whats on!
